OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. — Candidate for Okaloosa School Board and mother of four Cynthia West today announced her campaign for District 5, saying the district needs stronger voices, clearer accountability, and a new direction on the school board.
West said her decision reflects both her family’s deep ties to the Niceville community and a broader concern shared by many parents across Okaloosa County. The current school board leadership is not meeting the moment.
“Our schools are facing serious challenges from student safety and bullying concerns to questions about transparency and long-term planning,” said West. “Families are asking for answers, and too often they are not getting them. We need a school board that listens, responds, and leads.”
West emphasized that these issues are not isolated to one part of the county, but reflect a system-wide need for stronger leadership and accountability at every level of the school board.
“This is bigger than any one seat,” West said. “It is about whether we have a school board willing to do the hard work and make the tough decisions our students deserve. Right now, that leadership is not where it needs to be.”
The West family relocated to Florida during military service and has since made Okaloosa County their permanent home. Her son attends Collegiate High School at Northwest Florida State College, and her children have been educated across multiple settings, including traditional public schools, charter programs, IEP services, and advanced academic pathways.
“That experience has shown me how different every child’s needs are and how important it is to have leadership that understands that reality,” West said.
West’s campaign will focus on three core priorities: improving student safety, restoring transparency, and ensuring responsible long-term fiscal management.
“We do not need more of the same,” West concluded. “We need leadership that shows up, pays attention, and actually gets the job done for students and families.”
